TOPIC: FIRST STAGE ON BREAKING FREE FROM ADDICTION


Last week, we started the series on BREAKING FREE FROM ADDICTION and by the grace of God, today we shall continue on the series.

We will be discussing the stages of breaking free from addiction.

The following are the first stage of breaking free from addiction:

1. Find out the Root: why am I going into this addiction, what brought me here? If you don’t know why you are doing something then the solution will be difficult.Some causes can include: Pressure, Stress, Low Self esteem, could it be search of control.Once you can locate the reason then it’s easy to break free.

2. Label Your Thoughts: That is, Spread it out. (Proverbs 23:7) Control your thoughts, if you leave your thoughts to be careless then that is going to be a big problem. Whenever you can’t get a hold of your thoughts, then you should cast it down.Once your thoughts are pure, your life will be clean.

3. Choose Your Intentions: Why am I doing what I am doing? Ponder on your intentions. You have to count the cost, why do I want to be addicted to sleep? Then from the intention you would be able to weigh the positive and the negative results.

• Idleness can lead to addiction – Get busy, engage your mind productively.

HOW TO BREAK FREE

1. Meditation – means critically thinking about something. For instance, they say smokers are liable to die young, so ask yourself- do I want to die early?
In the cause of meditation you will be able to count the costs. (1peter 4:12)

2. Have a Vision – when you have a vision, it would help you shapen your habits. The kind of lifestyle you want to live will determine the kind of habits you should have. When you know the kind of life you want to live, then you would be able to ask yourself, does this addiction help my career/vision? If you are going to break free from certain types of Addiction, then there’s a need to have a vision.

If you are trying to break an Addiction, you can alternate the usage days. So if you are an alcohol addict, you should start by 1 day on and the other day off. Breaking addiction is a process.

When you are struggling to break free from Addiction, withdraw little by little, don’t stop at once, don’t try to run away from the act , just take mini breaks and gradually you would be free!
