TOPIC: HIGH EXPECTATIONS

TEXT: Luke 3:15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not

Memory Verse : Psalms 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

FOCUS
Today we are looking at high expectations as another enemy of gratitude. Expectation is not wrong; but what is expectation? It is anything you are expecting from the Almighty God. But when your expectations are high you are likely to go home disappointed. And once you are disappointed either in God or man, it will affect your gratitude and don’t forget it is gratitude for altitude.

Most times people say they are disappointed in people, what they are saying is that, their expectations were not met. It means they were ministered to below average. When it comes to God, our expectations comes from Him. From our opening scripture, the people’s expectation of John was toomuch, so they mused, they were complaining, murmuring, they weren’t sure. This is what happens when your expectations about God is unreasonable.

When you are always expecting high things, you will never understand the meaning of real life. That is why it is said that ” cut your coat according to your cloth ” not even according to size. If your expectations are too high, meeting it might be difficult but when your expectation is moderate; for example if you are expecting £10 and you were given £8, it’s still okay. But if you are expecting £200 and you were given £10, it’s far below. So, you are likely to leave that place grumbling, complaining.

God does not want our expectations to be too high, so that we don’t get disappointed. Gratitude is all He wants not high expectations.

LESSON
Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

We are still looking at how high expectations reduces gratitude and sometimes it doesn’t reduce it, it eliminates it. When your expectation is very high and you get very little, you will not thank God. Am sure that was what happened to the ten lepers. Maybe at the point of cleansing, they believed that Jesus was going to heal them but what happened, He only cleansed them and that is the first stage of healing. They were supposed to be made whole but because their expectation was too high, they left and never returned. But one felt, he was better than before, so he came back to show gratitude.

Offences come when expectations can’t be met. Am sure you remember John the Baptist, he sent a message to Jesus and said, is He the one to come or should we wait for another? That is high expectation. Nine never returned out of the ten lepers, they were thinking, is it only cleansing, why can’t He make them whole, if He calls Himself the son of God.

Anytime expectation is high, you will always go home disappointed, it will rob you of gratitude, thanksgiving, make you go into comparison, you will never see any reason why you should thank God. I believe this is why David said, ” my expectation is from the Lord, He is the only one that can grant my expectation, I will not be I haste” If you are cleansed, go back to church and testify. As you are testifying you will be made whole. There are stages of miracle; people thank God for big things but how about the small things.

Until you appreciate Him for His finger, you are not likely to see His hand and until His hand is celebrated you are not likely to see His fullness. Many are crying for the fullness of God and they never appreciate the little drop of mercy.

This morning, I want you to sit down and ask yourself; have I appreciated the little drops of mercy, have I acknowledged it and say thank you to Jesus? Until this is done, you are not grateful. Don’t let high expectations rob you of the remaining blessings God has for you in 2022.
