TOPIC: Grace is Truth
MEMORY VERSE: Psalms 33:4
[4]For the word of the LORD is right, and all his works are done in truth.
FOCUS: John 1:17
[17]For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Grace and truth meld together in the gospel message to form a key distinction between Christianity over other religions. In other religions, grace and truth are never balanced, instead, the deity being worshipped either dispenses justice at the expense of grace or dispenses grace at the expense of justice and truth.
Christianity is unique because God delivers grace through His justice and truth.
In this way, Christianity stands alone as an ontological faith, one that is fully dependent on a person which is Jesus Christ who perfectly balances and embodies both grace and truth in His very being.
Grace and truth must work in tandem. An emphasis on grace alone can dissipate into a shallow and sentimental foundation where justice or truth is discarded. Jesus’ character demonstrates the perfect balance of both grace and truth. He is full of both.
Law doesn’t have the power to save, but truth saves from law while grace keeps the truth alive in our hearts.
LESSON: John 1:14,
[14]And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Jesus Christ is an embodiment of grace and truth.
Jesus couldn’t have achieved his aim of saving us by redeeming us without telling us that he is the truth. As soon as this truth is accepted, we need grace to sustain our salvation and make it real by accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Saviour.
Grace is truth, and the totality of the gospel hangs on these two virtues.
Grace and truth came from Jesus Christ and this is the greatest news ever told, in his fullness we have all received grace.
PERSONAL CONFESSION: I am endowed with grace and truth.
PERSONAL PRAYER: Father, I receive the spirit of grace and truth in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Grace is a grease that eases life.
NOTE: Courage is grace under pressure.
